In addition, I try to outline the narrative character of explicit national identity. First, I will discuss in what sense national identity might be conceived of as a collective identity. Nation is regarded to be a kind of community, and so the concept of community and of collective identity will also be analysed. Collective identity is one held by many persons to be basic in their self-interpretation, independent of the fact whether their grasp of belonging together coincide or not.
The paper, then, clarifies the approach to national identity and nationalism in general. The scales of the conceptions of the nature of nations are wide enough, and some of the received views suggest that a nation is in a sense not real, but somehow a “constructed” community. The modernist approach entertains the idea that the nation is an imagined, and therefore not authentic community which was “invented”, “constructed” for political or other purposes in modern times. Variations of the theory differ in specifying what it is exactly that the “construction” of nation answers to, and there have been suggested different candidates to be this event: capitalism, industrialization, urbanization, political mobilization, secularization, compulsory education, or the rise of sciences.
The major thesis of this study might be summarized as follows. With regard to national identity we should talk of two different levels. The two levels of national identity can be separated prima facie as an implicit level and as an explicit one. It will be argued that on the implicit level that includes the vernacular, customs, habits, and mentality we have a basic orientation, articulation and frame of reference of the world around us and of ourselves. It is something given, something we grow up and are socialised into. On the explicit level of national identity – including the members of the nation as community, belonging to the national community, more or less shared accounts of common history, nation as a common enterprise, and political institutions of the nation – however, we have an identification offer, towards which we have a much freer relationship: we may make use of it, refuse it, or even be neutral with regard to it. The distinction between implicit and explicit national identity, thus, is meant to overcome a simplifying view of national identity that elides aspects of our identity with profoundly different characteristics. The two layers of what might be called national identity help to understand oppositions within national identity – for instance constructed versus given, primordial versus modern – that make its discourse hopelessly complex and trigger fierce debates. In this sense, present study is intended to be a conceptual one; avoiding mere speculation (armchair nationalism study), it seeks to dissolve conceptually phenomena unified in national identity.
Having separated two levels of what might be called national identity, it becomes possible to reconcile different theoretical approaches to national identity, by specifying the orientation of these theories: while theories claiming a basic, elementary character of national identity are to be traced back to the implicit level, theories highlighting the constructional character of national identity have primarily the explicit level in mind. In the last part of the paper it is shown that the explicit level of national identity has a narrative structure, and for this purpose the narrative theory of personal identity is taken as a model. While highlighting common aspects, the paper also considers differences between the narrative conception of collective and personal identity.

In this paper, after locating the approach among some others formulated in a similar vein, I will examine and try to contest the arguments given by Rorty and Shusterman for this idea. The basic claim I shall argue for is that there is a functional difference between works of art and products of entertainment, the generic difference of which should not be blurred even if we acknowledge the existence of borderline cases. This is, in turn, not to say that I seek to give an essentialist account of artworks. It may sound like a paradox, but in what follows I seek to establish a substantial difference between art (high art) and entertainment (low/popular art) without defending a substantialist or essentialist concept of art. Against this latter inspiration Adorno himself could be cited: " The concept of art is located in a historically changing constellation of elements; it refuses definition. " 1 Works of art constitute a field of human experience with an extreme individuality of its objects. It has often been remarked that the plurality of different branches of art itself might be regarded as a problem: " art and arts " – as Adorno entitled one of his essays. So I am not trying to give a unified sufficient definition of artworks, but will rather argue for discerning features that make artworks differ from entertainment products. What I am going to elaborate in works of art concerns a basic dimension inherent to them that could be and has been regarded as a clarification and enrichment of individual human life, be it in the form of artistic cognition or in the form of beauty.

While Jaspers describes the human mode of being in terms of different layers, Sartre sees human existence as a permanent struggle with contingency that should be understood as radical freedom.

1 Ld. 2 Ld. Benjamin (1991).

In analyzing the political catastrophe of the 20th century, she describes, among others, the situation of stateless-people, i.e. the refugees of the 1930s and 1940s, who had lost any citizenship. I delineate her theory of total domination and totalitarianism, and I put her considerations on human rights in this context. The paper discusses Arendt's basic idea that human rights make no sense without an instance that is able and willing to defend those rights.

Although not having reached a satisfying version of his approach, Dilthey opened with the distinction between natural sciences and human sciences an ongoing discussion on the unity or plurality of what might be called “science”. I follow in the paper how Dilthey developed in his later writings a hermeneutics designed to give epistemological foundations for human sciences. Afterwards, I explore the work of Dilthey by relating it to the philosophical hermeneutics of Hans-Georg Gadamer which can be analyzed partly as continuation, partly as critique of Dilthey’s philosophical project. I shall argue for the claim that Gadamer gives a deeper image of human sciences, while renouncing to grasp them in terms of their scientific character.
